Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF)

Seamless spray polyurethane foam roofing systems delivering unmatched insulation and waterproofing in a single application.

About Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF)

Spray polyurethane foam roofing eliminates the two biggest weaknesses of conventional commercial roofing: seams and inadequate insulation. Edison Roofing Contractor installs SPF roofing systems that create a seamless, self-flashing, continuously insulated roof surface across your entire commercial building. SPF is sprayed as a liquid directly onto your existing roof surface where it expands into a rigid, closed-cell foam that bonds to the substrate and fills every gap, crack, and irregular surface. The result is a monolithic waterproofing and insulation layer with no seams, no fasteners, and no joints where leaks typically originate in other roof systems. The foam provides an R-value of approximately six per inch, the highest insulation value of any commercial roofing material, dramatically reducing your heating and cooling costs. A protective elastomeric coating is then applied over the foam to provide UV resistance, weather protection, and reflectivity. SPF roofing systems are renewable, meaning the coating can be reapplied every ten to fifteen years to extend the system life indefinitely without ever tearing off the original roof. This makes SPF the most sustainable commercial roofing option available because it eliminates tear-off waste and continuously improves your building insulation over time. For building owners seeking maximum energy efficiency and minimum lifetime cost, spray foam roofing delivers results that no other system can match.

Our Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) Process

1

Substrate Assessment and Preparation

We evaluate your existing roof surface, repair any structural issues, clean the substrate thoroughly, and ensure all surfaces are dry and ready to receive the spray foam application.

2

Spray Foam Application

Using precision spray equipment, we apply the polyurethane foam in controlled passes to achieve the specified thickness and insulation value. The foam self-adheres and self-flashes around all penetrations.

3

Foam Shaping and Contouring

The foam surface is shaped to create positive drainage slopes, tapered transitions, and smooth contours that eliminate ponding water and promote efficient runoff.

4

Protective Coating Application

An elastomeric coating system, typically silicone or acrylic, is applied in multiple coats over the cured foam to provide UV protection, weather resistance, and reflective energy savings.

5

Quality Inspection and Documentation

The completed system is inspected for proper thickness, coating coverage, and drainage performance. Documentation including thickness readings and warranty information is provided.

Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) FAQ

How long does spray foam roofing last?

A spray foam roofing system with proper coating maintenance can last indefinitely. The foam itself does not degrade under the protective coating and maintains its insulation and waterproofing properties for the life of the building. The elastomeric coating requires reapplication every ten to fifteen years to maintain UV protection and weather resistance. Each recoat extends the system life another ten to fifteen years without any tear-off, making SPF the only truly renewable commercial roofing system available. Over a fifty-year building life, an SPF roof may require three to four recoats but never a full replacement. Contact us to learn about the long-term economics of spray foam roofing.

Can spray foam be applied over my existing commercial roof?

In most cases, yes, which is one of the greatest advantages of spray foam roofing. SPF can be applied directly over existing single-ply membranes, built-up roofing, modified bitumen, metal, and concrete roof surfaces without tear-off. The existing roof becomes the substrate, and the foam bonds directly to it while adding insulation and waterproofing. This eliminates tear-off labor costs, disposal fees, and landfill waste. The only requirements are that the existing roof must be structurally sound and reasonably dry. If significant moisture is trapped in the existing insulation, those areas must be removed and replaced before foam application. Schedule a moisture scan to determine if your roof is a good candidate.

Is spray foam roofing environmentally friendly?

Spray foam roofing is one of the most environmentally responsible commercial roofing choices available. It eliminates tear-off waste that would otherwise go to landfills, reduces building energy consumption by thirty to fifty percent through superior insulation, extends roof life indefinitely through renewable coating, and reduces urban heat island effect with its reflective surface. The foam also strengthens the building structure by adding rigidity to the roof deck. When you calculate the total environmental impact over a building lifecycle including manufacturing, transportation, installation waste, energy savings, and end-of-life disposal, SPF outperforms all conventional roofing alternatives significantly.
